Our organization has embraced the benefits such as better communication internally, improved efficiency, consistency in processes, and improved operational results. It has been 3 years since our initial foray into ISO world and we haven't looked back. This higher level of documentation allowed us a better understanding of our processes throughout all departments which is vital in a small company like ours where there are employees wearing multiple hats and efficiency is key to job success. Most of the additions were in the area of documentation which on the surface seemed like more work but proved to be a time saver when we needed traceability. Initially there are many hours of sifting through existing processes and procedures to assess, modify and add steps where necessary. Going through this process is not for the faint of heart. ISO is a quality certification verifying that a business has a quality management system in place that allows it to "consistently provide products and services that meet customer and applicable statutory and regulatory requirements." Key areas of focus for 9001 include risk management, process control, record keeping, and continuous process improvement. With a lot of hard work from everyone at Axis New England and guidance through an ISO consultant we were awarded our initial 9001:2008 certification. A combination of both factors led us to pursue certification with the hope that the benefits would outweigh the abundance of time this would take to get everything in order. Our customers were also asking us if we had a quality management system in place. We were not that much smaller employee count wise but we were quickly growing out of our systems that had served us for the better part of a decade. When we embarked on this journey back in 2014 we had no idea where to start.
